Humanitarian Response, Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate Change

PTYSM worked with different development partners (WFP, WVI & Save the Children) during crises like landslide, COVID-19 Pandemic and earthquake in Jajarkot and Rukum (West) district. After occurred a powerful earthquake in Jajarkot District, Karnali Province, on November 3, 2023, at 11:47 PM. Several aftershocks were then recorded. There are eighteen local governments that are impacted, with Jajarkot and Rukum West suffering the most from human casualties and house damage in the Karnali Province. According to preliminary reports, there have been 154 fatalities, 364 injuries, 96 rescues from areas affected by the earthquake, and significant building damage (PEOC, Nov. 7, 2023). Out of which 83 children (Girl:37 Boy:46), 71 adults (F:46 M:24) lost their life. Data also shows that 54.24% children, 30.06% female found to be lost their lives. Three tiers of government actively oversee the humanitarian response with the assistance of civil society, humanitarian organizations, and provincial and local governments. People had to spend the night in the open or in improvised shelters due to more than 382 aftershocks, which resulted in extremely cold temperatures.

Currently, PTYSM has been operating different activities in close coordination in the earthquake most affected area of Jajarkot District and Rukum (West) in coordination with DDMC, LDMC as well as grassroots level stakeholders. PTYSM has been performing a strong local implementing partner, is responsible for project implementation with focusing on NFI- (winterization kit), WASH, food, risk communication on GESI and disabilities and DRR issues, accountability measures, sharing information and report consolidation. PTYSM has been leading to make transitional shelter, Wash facilities and drinking water management in the recovery phase. In this situation, PTYSM has been supporting to earth quake affected people in partnership with different development agencies in rescue, relief, recovery phase as per the below partners.

PTYSM has been supporting to earthquake affected household of Nalgadh Municipality of Jajarkot Distruct and Rukum (West) of Karnali province in partnership of the Save the Children International. This project has been supporting for 400 House hold Winterization tent with family winterization kit, toilet construction, Wash facilities in Jajarkot and Rekum West District. This support has been providing for 250 households from Nalgad municipality ward no 3 and 4 and 150 household for Aathbiskot municipality ward no 11. This project has been providing support in winterization for the household, Wash Facilities, Protection and Psychosocial first aid service to the affected household. The total amount of this project is NPR. 26,505,436.00 for the period from 16th Nov 2023 to 15th April, 2024.

At the same time, PTYSM has been implementing START Fund Nepal N-19 Project in the partnership with WVI Nepal for 45 days project. This project has been supporting for 131 House hold transitional Shelter construction, toilet construction, Wash facilities in Jajarkot and Rekum West District.This support has been providing to selected 64 households from Nalgad municipality ward no 6 and 67 household for Aathbiskot municipality ward no 4. This project has been providing support in Shelter construction, Wash Facilities, Protection and psychosocial counseling. PTYSM has been mobilizing Rs 250,00,000 for this project from 7th December 2023 to 22th January 2024 duration.

Likewise, PTYSM has supported to equip the earthquake affected population with immediate relief support and sustainable recovery ensuring no further loss of life, contributing to child protection and community safeguarding and nurturing the sense of safety and resilience from the West Nepal Emergency Response Project in partnership with WVI Nepal. The project mainly focuses in the children and families affected from the earthquake met their immediate needs, Earthquake-affected families restored their livelihoods and better prepared to respond to future disasters and shocks having access to basic services. The project has been implemented in Nalgad and Bheri Municipality, Jajarkot Kushe Rural Municipality, Jajarkot (per request of the government). Shelter/NFI, Education, Protection, Livelihoods sector support was the main focuses of this project. This project has supported to earthquake affected people as relief phase from 4th Oct 2023 to 2023. After completing of this phase organization has been implementing recovery Phase of the project from 1st Dec 2023 to 30th Dec 2024. The total amount was NPR. 11,175,270.00 for the implementation of the project.

PTYSM worked with Barekot Rural municipality during the time of landslide for Cash for assets project and Food distribution project in Oct 2020 to June 2021 in partnership with World food program. It was an emergency response and early recovery project affected by the Barekot landslide and completed a food distribution project within 30 days and Cash for work project within 6 months. Also, PTYSM has worked with Save the Children in Chandgad Municipality from 7 Years in normal situations as well as COVID-19 Pandemic. During the time of COVID-19 Pandemic, PTYSM Supported Food and shelter for the most vulnerable 4500 HH of the Chhedagad Municipality in coordination with local government and civil society organizations within 20 days in 2020 and 2021. Also, it has well experienced and well-equipped manpower to reach disaster affected populations for response.

PTYSM provides facilitation and support for develop policy plans to the community and district-level DRM committees. Firstly, conducts Participatory Vulnerable Capacity Assessment (PVCA) at the community level with the participation of community members, political leaders, teachers, students, and stakeholders using participatory methods. After the preparation of the plans, PTYSM supports to conduct of planned activities by the community through the linkage/coordination/collaboration with related stakeholders (GOs, I/NGOs and private sectors, etc.). The organization especially focused on DRR awareness, preparedness, and response at the community level.
