Capacity development of the schools and teachers for promoting learning achievements of children

Since 2016, PTYSM has been working in the education sector, particularly in strengthening the learning achievements of children, and emerged as one of the leading NGOs in the Karnali province particularly in the Jajarkot district. It has been partnering with Save the Children and World Education to plan and implement education programs and activities that significantly contributed to access to education, improve learning achievement of the children, safe schools, and capacity development of the schools and teachers.  To this end, PTYSM has implemented the following School Management and teachers’ capacity-building activities.

  • Construction/ renovation of 69 schools including drinking water facilities, and toilet
  • Classroom management supported 104 schools and 122 ECCD in Chhedagad and Bheri municipalities of Jajarkot district.
  • Supported to develop School improvement Plan as per the school’s real needs and local context.
  • Conducted policy advocacy with local government and support to develop 6 education-related policies to the local government.
  • 300 teachers (118 female and 182 male) teachers of 199 Schools have received training on Inclusive Education and Early grade Reading, the teaching-learning process from the Inclusive education project funded by World Education.
  • Facilitating to promote school-at-home programs for disabled children who have no access of formal school. Established 8 school at home centers for disabled children.
  • Successfully conducted training to 345 Early Grade school teachers from the entire districts on Early Grade Reading (EGR) with orientation for SMCs/ PTAs
  • Facilitating to ensure school governance and community participation for developing model schools.

Therefore, PTYSM has strong institutional memories with training packages and trained human resources in the domain of inclusive education, teaching-learning process, and EGR which can be immediately mobilized in the districts of the Karnali Province.

Capacity building of Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) facilitators and teachers

Since 2016,PTYSM has implemented the following important interventions which strengthened its organizational capacity in terms of resources and trained human resources including the capacity to develop locally based teaching and learning materials.

  • Basic Training for 107 ECCD teachers and Early Literacy and Math (ELM) skill development training for ECCD teachers of Chhedagad Municipality;
  • Developed and implemented an adaptive model of ECCD for the geographical area including orientation to ECCD teachers on updated curriculum and life skills;
  • Supported ECCD coordination committee formation and make it functional based on the ECCD strategy 2077-2088 from ABASAR Project.
  • Established system to conduct ECCD mobile meetings for 107 ECCD teachers of Chhedagad municipality for learning sharing on a quarterly basis.
  • PTYSM has developed its capacity on use of local teaching and learning materials

Therefore, it has gained significant expertise to scale up and replicate such learnings outside the districts in the Karnali province for capacity building relevant government agencies.

Experience of collaboration with the local governments in development of the education plan

PTYSM has been collaborating with the local governments in the Jajarkot district in formulating contextual education plan in line with the spirit of School Sector Development Plan (SSDP 2016-2023). To this end, PTYSM has organized several orientation and local policy gap analysis sessions for education stakeholders at local level in Chhedagad municipality. The key policies, guidelines and strategies formulated by the Chhedagad municipality in technical support are;

  • Support in disability children profiles the development.
  • Free and compulsory basic education declaration
  • Child Protection Preparedness and Response Plan
  • Child labor reduction and management strategy

  • Budget analysis and child profile
  • Youth profile
  • Food Security Preparedness and Response plan.
  • Poverty Eradication policy of Chhedagad municipality
  • Support in School improvement plan Development.

Moreover, PTYSM has technically supported education stakeholders of Chhedagad municipality in COVID-19 preparedness and response plan development including formulation of School Reopening Guideline for Pandemic and epidemic context. Therefore, PTYSM has technical and human resources capacity to technically support local government and education stakeholders to formulate and roll out various policies, guidelines and strategies in the province.

Inclusive education covering children with the disabilities and minorities

PTYSM, as an NGO working in education sector, has been continuously strengthening its capacity (guidelines, resource materials and human resources) to bring value addition to the government in ensuring access to quality education to all. In this direction, following are key achievements;

  • PTYSM successfully delivered trainings to 300 teachers (118 females and 182 male) teacher of 199 schools on Inclusive Education and teaching-learning process from the Inclusive education project funded by the World education. Moreover, it has supported in formulation of individual Education plans of the children with the disability in different rural/municipalities of Jajarkot district.
  • To ensure access of children with the disabilities and excluded groups to quality education, PTYSM has been supporting in collaboration concerned municipalities with “School at-Home” and home-schooling Programs and approaches.
  • Home teacher program support marginalized and excluded group children in
  • It has been supporting children from excluded with high risk of drop out with the special education materials to attract and retain in school.
  • It has also knowledge and experience in promoting local materials and language of instruction to enhance learning achievements of children and promote inclusive education.
  • It has also knowledge of awareness program and conducting health screening camps for disabled children in different geographical areas of the Jajarkot.

Capacity building of government counterparts at Province, district and local levels

PTYSM has been closely working with the government structures at district and local levels for several years for their capacity building and replication of good practices from the PTYSM’s education intervention. Besides it effort for capacity building and technical support education policy development, it has significantly contributed in rolling out Integrated Education Management information system Local governments’ focal persons of the education section in Jajarkot district and roll out system at school level. Moreover, it has been coordinating with province-level and district level EDCU for policy implementation curriculum development self-learning book.
